Spotted Nyonya Wins President's Design Award
Mr Hans Tan (B.A. Industrial Design), an instructor at the Division of Industrial Design and an NUS alumnus, was awarded the President's Design Award 2012 for his creative interpretation of Nyonya porcelain vessels.
He received the Design of the Year award from Singapore President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam on 4 December 2012.
Oscillating Creations Capture 3D Design Prize
Mr Clement Zheng a teaching assistant and recent graduate from the Division of Industrial Design, beat some 40 contestants from around the world to clinch the first prize in the Purmundus Challenge 2012, an international three-dimensional printing competition.
Mr Zheng submitted two winning designs for the theme of "jewellery for human beings or their direct environment".
Asst Prof Florian Schaetz
Mr Schaetz (Department of Architecture) and Mr Khoo Beng Keat of MAJ Aviation Pte Ltd were awarded the Singapore Concrete Institute Excellence Awards 2012, Innovators Category on 20 Nov 2012 for the world’s first multi-storey aircraft carousel storage and parking system.
Prof George Ofori
Prof Ofori from the Department of Building was elected into the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. The induction into the fellowship was held on 19 Nov 2012.
Prof Liow Kim Hiang
In Oct 2012, Prof Liow’s paper entitled “Volatility Interdependence in European Real Estate Securities Markets: Who is the Most Influential?” presented at the 2012 European Real Estate Society Conference won the “EMERALD Gerald Brown Memorial Prize for the Best Paper on Real Estate Markets and Forecasting”. Prof Liow is from the Department of Real Estate.

On 8 Jan 2013, their entry Philadelphia ! won the Special Jury Prize for Best Urban Amenities in the 2013 Ed Bacon Student Design Competition, 8 January 2013. This international student design competition, focusing on an urban design challenge in Philadelphia USA that has broad implications for cities around the world, is organized annually by the Philadelphia Centre for Architecture since 2006.
Teo Wei Ling (M Arch programme)
Miss Teo Wei Ling was awarded 1st Prize at the BCA-SIA-SGBC International Tropical Architecture Design Competition 2012 which was held on 10 Oct 2012 at the BCA Academy Singapore.
Mr Raymond Hon, a third year student from the Division of Industrial Design, was selected as one of five winners in the Bench competition organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. Bench is a design competition that enables everyone to remember the former National Stadium in a special way. His design is a bench constructed out of the wood salvaged from the benches of the Old National Stadium. The project was developed from Mr Hans Tan’s (Division of Industrial Design) studio.

Besides Mr Hans Tan (see above), we would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Mr Tan Cheng Siong for winning the President's Design Award 2012, Singapore's most prestigious design honour.
Mr Tan Cheng Siong, Diploma in Architecture ’64 & M.A. Urban Planning ’72
The iconic Pearl Bank Apartments.
Mr Tan Cheng Siong, Principal of Archurban Architects Planners, was awarded the Designer of the Year award for his contributions to Singapore's residential architecture. His notable works include the iconic Pearl Bank Apartments which was the first super high-rise in Singapore built in the late 60s; and Pandan Valley Condominium, where he pioneered the first condominium housing typology with community spaces for residents.
