2nd Vertical Cities Asia International Design Competition
The School of Design and Environment, international philanthropic organisation World Future Foundation Ltd (WFF) and Beijing Vantone Citylogic Investment Corp. announced the winners of the second Vertical Cities Asia International Design Competition, which seeks to address the problems of urban sprawl, congestion and pollution faced by Asia’s overcrowded cities.
Two teams from the Delft University of Technology were co-awarded the first prize with the winning entries titled “The Open Ended City” and “Life Time City”, while teams from Tokyo University and Tongji University took the second and third place, respectively. Four Honourable Mentions were also handed out to teams from ETH Zurich, University of Michigan, NUS and Tokyo University.
2012 AsRES & AREUEA Joint International Conference
The Department of Real Estate and the Institute of Real Estate Studies jointly hosted an international conference at Marina Bay Sands from 7 – 10 July.
Organised by the Asian Real Estate Society (AsRES) and the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association (AREUEA), the conference was attended by over 300 participants from 20 countries over the 4 days.
Master of Science (Environmental Management) Students Recognised for Achievements
Shell Best Dissertation Award
Every year, the Shell Group of Companies in Singapore recognises one student with the Shell Best Dissertation Award.
This year, Ms Leong Li Sun received this distinction for her dissertation ‘The Second Green Revolution’.
The study observed that the most notable barrier to the successful implementation of second Green Revolution technologies stems from the shortage of established and appropriately specific evaluation methods for agricultural sustainability.
The award was presented by Dr. Huck Poh, General Manager of Bukom Refinery and a Board Director of Shell Eastern Petroleum.
AECOM Prize for Environmental Master Planning
Every year, teams of MEM students are tasked with creating a master plan as part of their Environmental Planning module. The winning team is then awarded a book prize by sponsor, AECOM. The members of the winning group in 2011-12 were: Poquita Rosa Celia Mahinay; Wan Khin Wai; Wan Qing; Wendy Wong Shih Ling; Zanoria Ellen May Bravo; Vedasri Kada; and Wutt Yee Khin.
Mr Chew Chee Yong, Senior Manager, Marketing and Communications, Southeast Asia & India, AECOM, presented the AECOM Book Prize to the winning group.

Prof Heng Chye Kiang
Appointed as Jury Member of the International Design Competition for the Tianjin Eco-City Central District Waterfront Belt and Main Centre from 29 May – 1 Jun 2012.
A/Prof Chandra Sekhar
Awarded the SPRING Singapore Merit Award for his significant contributions to the national standards programme. The award was presented to him at the Standard Partners Awards 2012 event on 19 July 2012.
Dr Malone-Lee Lai Choo
Invited by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to be the Jury Chair for the “Journey of Possibilities” International Ideas Competition for the Rail Corridor, under the segment, “Community ownership, pride and sense of well-being”. The competition judging period ran from 23-24 March 2012.
A/Prof Yen Ching Chiuan
Invited to be a Jury for the 2nd International Polygon Bike Design Competition on 27 January 2012 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Established in 2005, the Polygon Bike Design Competition is an annual international design competition open to creative people and design students who are invited to present innovative ideas for bike design for the future.
Dr Hwang Bon-Gang
Awarded Outstanding Reviewer at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2012 for the very impressive and significant contribution made as a Reviewer to Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management throughout 2011. He received notification of this award on 22 May 2012.
Prof Liow Kim Hiang
His paper entitled “Time Series Behaviour of Average Dynamic Conditional Correlations in European Real Estate Securities Markets: An Empirical Exploration” published in the Journal of European Real Estate Research has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2012.
