SDE Students Win Top Prize in Cool Ideas for Better HDB Living Competition 2011/12
Four first year students from the Department of Architecture clinched the top prize with their design: a prototype window that prevents rain from falling into HDB dwellings. The competition was jointly organised by HDB and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and was held in March 2012.
Industrial Design Student Claims Top Prize at Mapletree’s Outdoor Furniture Competition
Darren Yeo, a 4th year student from the Division of Industrial Design received $12,000 in cash and an overseas internship with renowned Japanese product designer Toshiyuki Kita for his winning entry: a cloud-inspired furniture design that can be used as a circular bench. The competition was organised by Mapletree Investments to mark the opening of the Mapletree Business City.
Dr Kua Harn Wei (Department of Building) has been invited by the Director of Rome-based Economic Web Institute to be an international advisor for a project proposal on designing and implementing an eco-neighbourhood in Monterotondo, Italy from Mar 2012 to Mar 2014.
A/Prof Yu Shi Ming (Department of Real Estate) has been invited by DSTA as an External Expert Member in its Accreditation Panel for Land use Planning & Estates Management competency domain.
Prof Ong Seow Eng (Department of Real Estate) has been appointed by the Jurong Town Council as a member of the Land Purchase Committee.

Cheah Kok Ming, Architecture ’90…
Is now a senior lecturer in the Department of Architecture. He received the 2011 NUS Outstanding Educator Award in recognition of his excellent teaching and ability to inspire Architecture students in their discovery of knowledge. In 2003, Kok Ming also won the URA Architectural Heritage Award for his design work for the Asian Civilisations Museum II.
Kong Mun Kwong, Estate Management ’71…
received the 2011 NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award for his achievements and service to NUS. At the 2011 National Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards, he was named Volunteer of the year for his 35 years of service to the community. He has been a member of SDE’s Advisory Committee since 2008.
