They were selected based on peer evaluation, student feedback and their teaching portfolios.

An invention by a team of researchers led by A/P Chandra Sekhar and Tham Kwok Wai won The Enterprise Challenge (TEC) Innovator Award. The TEC is a $29 million fund set up to provide funds for innovative proposals that have the potential to create new value or significant improvements to the delivery of public service. The award from TEC, which is administered by the Prime Minister’s Office, is for the field trial of the Single-Coil Twin Fan innovative air-conditioning system and is a recognition of the value and enterprise potential of the research in indoor environment and energy. The $210,000 grant is the first TEC grant to NUS, with NUS providing the University Hall and Administration Building as the test-bed in her role as Piloting Agent for the project. Design Competitions

Prof Heng Chye Kiang and Mr Low Boon Liang were consultants/collaborators to Singapore Archiland International in their award winning project on Tianjin Xiao Bai Lou Plaza, CBD. The jury’s citation and recommendation were announced in January 05. The 3 other invited participants for this international competition were Tianjin Architectural Institute & 54F.A+1 (Architects and Engineers, Germany), Hong Kong Xinye Architects (HK SAR), and Swedesign ( Sweden). The Xiao Bai Lou Plaza district is one of the six areas in Tianjin for which international urban design competitions were invited by the City of Tianjin.

A/P Joseph Lim's design entry on Henderson Crossing, a 250m long bridge spanning across Henderson Road connecting Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park, received Merit award in the Southern Ridges Bridge Design Competition.
65 submissions were received, with 11 from USA, UK, Japan, S Korea and China. Entries include:

Tongji University Design & Research Institute China,
Erdevicki Structural Engineering Canada and
Takenaka Architectural Developers Co Ltd Japan.
The competition was organized jointly by URA, NPB and LTA. |

The two-day forum, organised by the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, included a closed-door session attended by the Minister of Commerce, Mr Ali Saleh Al Saleh; Minister of Housing and Works, Mr Fahmi Al Jowder; Minister of State and Chairman of Tenders Board, Dr Abdulhussein Mirza; the Chairman of Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Khalid Mohammed Kanoo; and senior civil servants of these three ministries. The participants in the “open” part of the forum were senior construction contractors and consultants.

A/Ps Chandra Sekhar, Tham Kwok Wai and David Cheong founded Enhanced Air Quality Private Limited. The company provides a total solution towards good Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) while, at the same time, achieving energy efficiency. It focuses on the design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of a newly developed and patented air-conditioning and air distribution system, called the Single Coil Twin Fan (SCTF) system. The SCTF system provides “demand ventilation” and “demand cooling” by dynamically responding to the varying needs in the occupied zones of a building. A patent for the SCTF has been filed in the USA. Enhanced Air Quality Pte Ltd also provides specialist services in the area of IAQ measurements and in developing customized IAQ management plans. It can further provide customised training workshops in these areas.

A United States patent was issued to inventors A/Ps Chandra Sekhar, Tham Kwok Wai and Cheong Kok Wai David on 2 March 2004 for their invention entitled “Energy-efficient Variable-Air-Volume (VAV) System with Zonal Ventilation Control” (US6,698,219 B2).
This patent describes a newly developed air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation (ACMV) system with two variable air volume (VAV) systems for cooling and dehumidifying fresh outside air and recycled air independently. A prototype demonstrated significantly enhanced IAQ and energy savings of about 15%. |
