Bachelor of Science (Building) Programme

The full-time Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) (Building) undergraduate programme is a professional honours degree programme offered by the Department of Building, NUS and is designed to be completed in four years by students proceeding at a normal pace.

Recognition by Professional Bodies

The B.Sc. (Building) degree is fully recognised by the relevant local and professional bodies: the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers and the Singapore Institute of Building Limited. It is also recognised by the Commonwealth Association of Surveying and Land Economy.

The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building, UK and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK, i.e. graduates of the B.Sc. (Building) programme are exempted from all the examinations required for professional membership of these institutions.

Programme Structure

The undergraduates study a common curriculum during their first year with the students from the B.Sc. (Real Estate) programme. Students progressing at a normal pace would complete the programme within 8 semesters (4 years) while students who can proceed at a faster pace can complete the programme within 7 semesters (3.5 years). Students need to read essential modules, elective modules, general education modules and other modules offered by other faculties.

The programme is structured in terms of modules grouped into four core areas of study: Construction and Project Management, Construction Economics, Quantity Surveying and Total Building Performance.

Career Opportunities

Our B.Sc. (Building) graduates play an important role in the construction industry in Singapore and the region. Career opportunities exist in client, consultant and contracting organisations, both in the public and private sectors, where they work as project managers, quantity surveyors, contract managers and facilities managers, among other positions.

Other Programmes

Students undergo practical training, arranged by the department, to gain industrial experience, locally or overseas. They will also have the opportunity to participate in the Student Exchange Programme during their third year of study. The Student Exchange Programme provides students with overseas learning experience in a different cultural setting. Outstanding students with intellectual and leadership qualities may participate in the University Scholars Programme. University Scholars will be nurtured in a climate of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Master of Science (Project Management) programme aims to provide development and construction professionals with the sound management skills and techniques necessary for the successful completion of complex projects.

It is taught by senior faculty members and eminent practitioners. Both the art and science of successful project delivery are given due attention in a carefully structured arrangement of modules delivered in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops, and management exercises.
