Graduate Degrees by Coursework
Graduation Requirements

 

To graduate, candidates must fulfill all course requirements within their maximum candidature period (4 semesters for full-time and 6 semesters for part-time). The following grade scheme is used:

For 2000/2001, 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 cohorts:
The minimum CAP for fulfilment of the degree requirement is 2.50.

  1. A candidate will be given an academic warning if his CAP is below 2.50 in a semester.
  2. A candidate will be placed on academic probation of his CAP is below 2.50 in a semester for two consecutive semesters.
  3. A candidate will be refused re-admission to his course of study if his CAP is below 2.50 in a semester for three consecutive semesters.

For 2003/2004 cohort onwards: (Senate Delegacy meeting dated 16 Oct 02)
The minimum CAP for fulfilment of the degree requirement shall be 3.0.
The candidature of a student will be terminated if he/she obtains the following:

  1. A CAP of less than 2.50 for two consecutive semesters.
  2. A CAP of less than 3.0 for three consecutive semesters.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)

Graduation Requirement
The following are the requirements for award of degree:

  • Minimum CAP of 3.5 for all six modules under the coursework requirement.
  • Satisfactory Grade of C or better in English Language Course (Advanced Level), if student is required to take the graduate English Language Course.
  • Pass in Qualifying Examination (includes a Comprehensive Written Examination and a Closed Door Oral Defence of PhD thesis proposal).
  • “Satisfactory” grade in Doctoral Seminar Module
  • Pass in PhD Thesis and Oral Examination.

Coursework Requirement
Candidates:

  • are required to read and pass 6 modules (at levels 5000 and 6000) as prescribed by the Supervisor/Department,
  • are required to take a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 modules in each semester consecutively from the beginning of the semester (this is effective for July 2003 intake onwards),
  • must obtain an average grade of at least B (CAP of 3.50) to be computed from all 6 modules taken.

Candidates are required to meet the above requirements within 3 semesters from the start of their candidature (excluding the Special Term). In addition to the coursework requirements, PhD candidates have to take and pass a PhD Qualifying Examination.

Candidates who performed marginally below the minimum requirement but deemed to be able to achieve it mathematically with the 2 remaining modules would be allowed to continue to the next semester. Otherwise they would be asked to leave.

Continuation Requirement
In any semester in which the candidate’s CAP falls below the CAP required for graduation (3.5 for PhD), a warning will be issued to the candidate. If, in the following semester, the candidate’s CAP again falls below the graduation requirement, but not sufficiently to warrant immediate termination, the candidate will be placed on probation

CAP should not fall below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters or 3.5 for three consecutive semesters. If a candidate’s CAP falls below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters or 3.5 for three consecutive semesters, the candidature will be terminated.

Doctoral Seminar Module

Candidates are required to make a formal seminar presentation in a research forum before the submission of thesis for examination. The seminar will be graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory (S/U) on the basis of presentation, participation and attendance.

MASTER’S DEGREE BY RESEARCH (M.Sc./M.A./M.Phil.)

Graduation Requirement
The following are the requirements for the award of degree:

  • MinCAP of 3.0 for all four modules taken under the coursework requirement.
  • Satisfactory Grade of “C” or better in English Language Course (Intermediate Level), if student is required to take the graduate English Language Course.
  • “Satisfactory” grade in graduate seminar module
  • Pass in Master’s thesis

Coursework Requirement
Candidates:

  • are required to read and pass 4 modules (at levels 5000 and 6000) as prescribed by the supervisor/department,
  • are required to take a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 modules in each semester consecutively from the beginning of the semester (this is effective for July
    2003 intake onwards),
  • must obtain an average grade of B- (CAP of 3.00) to be computed from all 4 modules taken.

Candidates are required to meet the above requirements within 2 semesters from the start of their candidature (excluding the Special Term).

Candidates who do not meet the minimum requirement in the first semester would be asked to leave.

Continuation Requirement

In any semester in which the candidate’s CAP falls below the CAP required for graduation (3.0 for Master), a warning will be issued to the candidate. If, in the following semester, the candidate’s CAP again falls below the graduation requirement, but not sufficiently to warrant immediate termination, the candidate will be placed on probation.

CAP should not fall below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters and 3.0 for three consecutive semesters. If a candidate’s CAP falls below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters, the candidature will be terminated.

Graduate Coursework and Research Candidates taking Coursework Modules

A. Students With Illnesses During Examination Period

 

1. A candidate who wishes to take examinations in hospitals must give at least two working days’ notice to the Department. Where such notice could not be given, the candidate is advised to submit a yellow form for consideration by the Board of Examiners.

2. A candidate who is already warded in a hospital during the examination period and who wishes to take examinations in the hospital must give at least two working days’ notice to the Department.

3. A candidate with an infectious disease (e.g. chicken pox) may request to take the examination in an isolated location. Such a candidate must give ample notice for the Registrar’s Office/Department to conduct the examination in a special location. Candidates with other serious and highly contagious/infectious diseases will not be allowed to take the examination.

4. Candidates must submit the yellow form within 48 hours after their last paper, indicating the reasons. The yellow form is available at the Registrar’s Office, Dean's Office or can be downloaded from http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/info/exam.htm.
All yellow forms submitted by graduates and undergraduates must be forwarded to the SDE Dean's Office.

 

 

B. Procedure for Appeals against Dismissal

 

1. Every student is allowed only ONE appeal.

2. Appeals should be addressed to the Vice-Dean (Academic) and submitted to the SDE Dean's Office.

3. Appeals must be made within 2 calendar weeks of the release of exam results.

4. Late submissions will not be accepted.

 

Application forms (available at the Departments) are to be submitted within 3 days from the date of announcement of results.
